Education for children

Child & World promotes participation in the public education of children whose parents lack the means to allow their children to do so. Our local professional co-operation partners advise in choice of schools and also negotiate entry.

Furthermore assistance is given in paying for transport, tuition fees, educational tools, meals and the necessary medical and social care for a group of up to 150 children. In June we will start with the first group of 50 pupils. In addition, our local partners work for structural improvements of education, e.g. by providing homework supervision, additional education, and regular consultation with professionals, governmental organisations, and school governing boards.

Improvement opportunities for parents

Neighbourhood improvement projects are undertaken by local partners and volunteer workers. Activities range from supplying family planning and AIDS prevention information, to health classes, and counselling by social workers. Additionally, in co-operation with a number of students/graduates of TU-Delft Industrial Design faculty, we organise local workshops in small scale entrepreneurship, sustainable production, and marketing possibilities.

BOP - Design for Emerging Markets

‘Base of the Pyramid’ (BOP) refers to the 4-billion plus poor, mostly in non-western countries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa, living on incomes of less than $3260 per year.

The foundation for the BoP strategy was laid by Prahalad & Hart, in their publication ‘The Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid, Strategy+business’, published in the first quarter of 2002, promising fortune for entrepreneurs and at the same time offering the perspective of escape from the poverty to the poor world majority.

The University of Delft’s Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering has traditionally adopted a human centred approach, in which needs are the central driving force uniting technology and business. The BoP strategy has radically stimulated them to focus on designing products and services to meet the needs of the under-served poor, which represent a huge market and was hitherto unattended.
